The James Kane Foundation is pleased to support the Business Experience Programme, a structured mentoring initiative designed to connect students with local employers and provide insight into career pathways and workplace expectations.
The programme involved:
• 30 students across three schools
• 23 local businesses
• 6 one-to-one mentoring sessions per student
• 6 industry-focused masterclasses
• 1 employer site visit
• A graduation event upon completion
Participating schools:
• Dromore High School
• New-Bridge Integrated College
• St Patrick’s College
In total, 250 students were introduced to the programme, with 30 selected through an application and interview process.
Employer feedback following the first mentoring sessions was positive, with businesses valuing the opportunity to learn more about the current school curriculum and engage directly with young people considering careers in their sector. Several employers commented on the quality and engagement of the students involved.
The programme also helped strengthen relationships between schools and local employers. By involving both small and large businesses, students were able to access a range of perspectives and experiences, while employers gained opportunities to engage with potential future employees.
Funding from The James Kane Foundation supported programme coordination, mentor training, educational resources and transport for employer visits. This investment enabled the collaboration required between schools and businesses and helped ensure students could participate fully in programme activities.
Students visited:
• Alternative Heat
• Johnson Brothers Coffee
• Royal Terberg and MPM
The programme concluded with a graduation event at Dromore High School, where students received certificates recognising their participation and completion of the programme.
A spokesperon said:
“The funding provided by the James Kane Foundation for the Business Experience Programme has been crucial in giving students direct and meaningful communication with professionals across a range of sectors. Providing such a personalised programme within a high school setting has ensured that students feel valued in their participation and engagement.
For some students, the experience has confirmed their chosen career path, while for others it has provided a valuable reality check, helping them recognise that their initial career choice may not be the right fit. In this sense, the programme has become a journey of self-discovery.
This financial investment in students has been instrumental in supporting their education, fostering relationships with industry professionals, and strengthening meaningful connections with a wider network of stakeholders.”
All participating employers have indicated that they would be willing to continue their involvement with schools and take part in future programme delivery.
