The James Kane Foundation recently funded Workplus to offer an innovative work experience programme to schools within the Antrim and Newtownabbey Council (ANBC area) entitled ‘Developing Transversal Skills.’
The purpose of this programme was to support students in assessing their skills in relation to career choices and broaden access by offering relevant work experience from local employers across a range of industries. This project helped 1,200 pupils from 12 schools across ANBC. All students on the programme were also given access to a unified skills, career self- management and work experience platform for three months.
Workplus partnered with careers platform, Morrisby, and Changing Education’s work experience platform, Connect, to provide a single point of access for teachers, pupils and employers. Pupils were able to access skills assessments which led to further information about relevant career pathways. Pupils could then view work experience opportunities uploaded by local employers and indicate their choice of placement. Teachers could then provide informed advice when confirming placement as they could access pupils’ skill assessment results and preferred employer choices. 22 employers signed up to the portal to offer placements.
